The Mothman Prophecies

The infamous tale of the Mothman began in 1966, when a group of four American teenagers claimed to have spotted a demonic bird-like creature with glowing red eyes near Pleasant Point, Virginia. Many other similar reports of sightings came to surface which led the town to believe in the existence of this monster.

A newspaper report in the Point Pleasant Register titled "Couples See Man-Sized Bird...Creature...Something", made the sightings into regional folklore. The first sighting was coined in 1966, when a bunch of grave diggers spied the creature flying above the canopies. Just a few days later, two couples also made sightings and reported the cases to police.

One theory exists that the Mothman was really a sandhill crane – a type of large bird that has a 7-foot wingspan and red-lined eyes. Others believe it to be an alien, a “Thunderbird” (giant terrible birds from Native American folklore), a mutant bird, an angel or simply a hoax. When the Silver Bridge in Pleasant Point collapsed in 1967 and killed 46 people, including Mothman witnesses, the tale of the Mothman became linked to the disaster and went down in history as a legend. It gave rise to books, TV shows and a movie called The Mothman Prophecies. The mysterious case of the Mothman will continue to live on as a simply fact or legend, we may never know.
