JonBenet Ramsey: A 20 Year Old Mystery

Ramsey was crowned Little Miss Colorado the year she died. At just 6 years old,
she endured a gruesome death that is still unsolved 20 years later.
It was
Boxing Day in 1996, when JonBenet’s parents claim they found a ransom note
demanding £118,000 for the return of their daughter. Soon after
calling the police, the parents searched the house to find the shock of their
lives. JonBenet’s lifeless body was found in the basement, tied up and gagged,
with a nylon cord wrapped around her neck. There were fractures to the skull
and possible signs of sexual assault. Questions began to arise and immediately the
public were quick to raise eyebrows at the family members.
Amongst law enforcement, the media and the public, theories
abounded as to who the killer(s) was. One theory is that JonBenét was
accidentally killed by a family member, who then staged it to look like a kidnapping.
However, DNA evidence exonerated the family in 2008. One particularly bizarre
detail in the murder is the ransom note. The amount indicated for the return of
JonBenet is the exact figure of the father’s annual bonus. The note was also
written in a notepad belonging to the family. Some have questioned why the
mother called the police when the note clearly stated that JonBenet would be ‘beheaded’
if this was done. Both parents in general acted strangely in such a grave time,
postponing police statements and becoming distant with answering questions.
Ransom note
The case is still open in 2017, with a mysterious false
confession coming from John Karr in 2006. His case was dropped after failed DNA
testing. This case is unsolved mainly because the crime scene was compromised
when friends and family of the Ramsey’s came in to frantically search for JonBenet.
However, this may have been a planned tactic by the true murderer. Plenty of
other mistakes by law enforcement were made in the early years; many of which
are irreversible. Boulder police processed more than 1,500 pieces of evidence
and interviewed more than 1,000 people about the case, but a conclusive
theory has still not been made.
