The Mystery of Marree Man
The famous desert mystery involves the sudden appearance of a figure of an aboriginal man throwing a boomerang carved on a desert plateau in central South Australia. The 'Marree Man' was created in absolute isolation from the western world, it lies on a plateau at Finnis Springs 60km west of the township Marree (Ancient Origins 2015).
The carving stands at an incredible 4.2km tall with a perimeter of 28 kilometres (Ancient Origins 2015). The drawing of the 'Marree Man' was first discovered in 1998, there were no footprints or tyre tracks leading to the figure and no witnesses to what had to be a collaborative effort (Daily Telegraph 2015).
Nobody has ever claimed credit for this artwork, yet a plaque was found buried near the object bearing the inscription "in honour of the land they once knew. His attainments in these pursuits are extraordinary; a constant source of wonderment and admiration" (Daily Telegraph 2015).
There is suggestions that the creator was Bardius Goldberg, a Northern Territory artist who died in 2002 and lived at Alice Springs, he has refused to either confirm or deny that he had created the image when questioned.
In all likelihood the secret died with Mr Goldberg and the truth will never become publicly known.
